Bong Joon Ho has found his post-“Parasite” project, and it appears the filmmaker is heading back to the world of sci-fi.
According to Deadline, Bong Joon Ho is set to write and direct an untitled film, based on the upcoming sci-fi novel, “Mickey7,” from author Edward Ashton. And maybe the most exciting bit of news about this project, outside of Bong’s involvement is the fact that Robert Pattinson is in talks to star in the film.
Given how we’ve seen Bong Joon Ho adapt source material in the past, it’s unclear how much of the novel, “Mickey7,” will end up in the untitled film. That said, the upcoming book is set in the far future where clones are produced to do unwanted, potentially dangerous space duties. So, Mickey7 is deployed on a dangerous mission and somehow lives, only to return to find that the colony has already replaced him with Mickey8. So, now Mickey7 must keep his identity secret while also saving the space colony. You have to assume Pattinson’s role will be that of Mickey7…and Mickey8.
The new film marks the first feature from Bong Joon Ho since the filmmaker shocked the world by winning a number of Oscars for his 2018 film, “Parasite.” That film is rightly seen as a masterpiece by many and is one of the filmmaker’s best works yet. Previously, he worked on the sci-fi feature, “Snowpiercer,” as well as genre films like “Okja” and “The Host.” If you want to see what many believe to be Bong’s best work, “Memories of Murder” just got a proper re-release shortly after “Parasite” scored so many wins at the Oscars.
It’s unclear when production might begin on the untitled film, but the report claims this will be the next project for both Pattinson, coming off his “The Batman” duties, and for Bong.
