Christopher Nolan has always had a knack for finding top-tier talent for his features. And it would appear that he’s pulling out all the stops for his first film with his new studio, Universal, as the filmmaker has brought in two more of the biggest names in Hollywood.
According to Deadline, Robert Downey, Jr. and Matt Damon are both in talks to join the cast of Christopher Nolan’s untitled film about scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The roles for these two have yet to be revealed, but if it becomes official, they’ll join a cast that already includes Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt.
Is it even necessary to qualify the additions of Downey and Damon? These are two of the most well known celebrities on the planet. Downey is perhaps the most famous actor in the world, thanks in no small part to his decade-long run as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Damon is no slouch either, having starred in the Jason Bourne franchise, as well as a ton of other major films. He’s even had a small role in Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi film, “Interstellar.”
Even though most Christopher Nolan films feel like huge events, the new Oppenheimer one is especially interesting, as it marks the first feature with his new studio, Universal, after leaving Warner Bros. reportedly due to that studio’s decision to release its 2021 films in both theaters and on HBO Max. But according to Universal, the studio is happy to give Nolan whatever he wants for his new film, including a 100-day exclusive theatrical window, which is now going to be twice what most studios would offer for films.
Nolan’s new film is expected to arrive in July 2023.
