Well this is certainly a good way to wash the taste of the forthcoming “Midnight Run 2” sequel out of our mouth.
Robert De Niro is attached to the title role in the gestating biopic of legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, that “will focus on the years that Lombardi rebuilt the Green Bay Packers into gridiron NFL champions.” As we previously reported, ESPN and Andell entertainment have also acquired the coach’s life rights from his son Vince Lombardi Jr., as well as the rights to the book “Instant Replay” by former Packers offensive lineman Jerry Kramer. Undoubtedly, that research will play into the script being penned by Eric Roth, who also wrote De Niro’s 2006 directorial effort, “The Good Shepherd.” The film is still a little ways off, as its being eyed for a release, “between the AFC and NFC conference championship games and the Super Bowl in 2012.” That’s a savvy move right there.
This is probably one of the more interesting potential De Niro roles to be announced in ages. This film adds yet another project to the actor’s growing slate which includes Lee Daniels’ “Selma” and the sci-fi thriller “Dark Fields.” De Niro will hit the screen a couple times this year, starring in “Machete” and the still untitled (really?) “Meet The Fockers” sequel.
