Got a Tip?

‘Ricki And The Flash’ Will Feature Original Songs By Jenny Lewis & Johnathan Rice, Eminem Producing ‘Southpaw’ Soundtrack

Ricki and the FlashMeryl Streep, Jonathan Demme, and Diablo Cody are an unlikely triad, but here we are with the upcoming dramedy “Ricki And The Flash," written by Cody, directed by Demme, and starring Streep. The movie centers on an aging rock star (Streep) who gave up her family years ago to become famous. Decades later, she tries to get them back with disastrous results. When you think of it as a movie about damaged people, perhaps Demme’s “Rachel Getting Married” actually makes him the perfect filmmaker for the movie. And fun fact, the movie’s based on Diablo Cody’s real life: Her mother-in-law is also an aging rocker and their family dynamic is similar. "Rock ‘n’ roll is her life,” Cody told told Yahoo recently. “I think there’ve been people in her life who’ve thought it was kind of a silly thing for a mom or grandmother to do and she doesn’t give a damn. I love that about her.” Cody talks about this a little bit in the clip below, and check out a few new ‘Ricki’ photos below while you’re there.

On the soundtrack side of things, apparently indie rockers Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice — who have become a movie songwriting pair and wrote original music for the Anne Hathaway indie “Song One” — will contribute music to “Ricki And The Flash” as well. According to Film Music Reporter they’ll be writing original songs, and IMDB already has a song credit for one track called "Cold One."

Considering it was once a starring vehicle for the rapper, it’s perhaps no surprise that Eminem will produce the soundtrack for “Southpaw,” a boxing movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Coming out on Shady Records, the album is scheduled for release this July. There’s no track list yet, but the first single off the album will be an Eminem track called "Phenomenal," produced by DJ Khalil. You can hear a preview of the track in the Beats By Dre commercial below (via Billboard).

Black Mass

After his thrash-metally score for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and upcoming musical contributions to “Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” electronic-artist-turned-composer Junkie XL is finding himself in demand. He’s going to score Scott Cooper’s “Black Mass” starring Johnny Depp, but according to the "Black Mass" credits he’ll drop the nom de plume for this one and go by his given name, Tom Holkenborg.

Longtime David Gordon Green collaborator David Wingo has scored almost all of the indie filmmaker’s movies, or co-composed them with friends like Jeff McIlwain (“Snow Angels”) and Explosions In The Sky (“Prince Avalanche”). For Green’s next effort, “Our Brand Is Crisis” starring Sandra Bullock, Wingo will go it alone musically, says Film Music Reporter.

Launched into the film composing world with his still-classic modern score for Miranda July (“Me And You And Everyone We Know”), musician Michael Andrews has found a niche for himself in the world of comedy and has sort of become the defacto composer for the Judd Apatow world and related comedy friends (his impressive resume includes "Bridesmaids," "The Five-Year Engagement," "The Heat," "Neighbors," "Funny People"). So perhaps it’s no surprise that Film Music Reporter reveals Andrews will also score Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg‘s “Daddy’s Home,” which is produced by Adam McKay and expected to arrive sometime in 2016.
