Earlier today, it was announced that Damon Lindelof and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy are teaming up to work on a new “Star Wars” film. This just adds to the general confusion surrounding the franchise, at least on the film side of things, as we have yet to get a firm announcement about which “Star Wars” feature will arrive in 2025 (if any). There’s a film from director Taika Waititi that’s supposedly still being worked on. There’s a film in the works from Marvel Studios’ own Kevin Feige. And yes, according to Rian Johnson, there are still talks about him returning to the galaxy far, far away.
According to a new interview with Variety, Rian Johnson was promoting his new “Knives Out” sequel, “Glass Onion,” and confirmed, yet again, that he is still working with Lucasfilm to make a new film in the “Star Wars” franchise. This is a project that has been talked about for the last 5 or so years, around the release of his own ‘The Last Jedi.’ While many people assumed it had been shelved, since we haven’t heard anything about it in years, it is apparently still being worked on.
“I have talked to [Kathleen Kennedy] about it and we’re still talking about it,” Johnson said. “I had such an amazing experience making ‘The Last Jedi.’ It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this [‘Glass Onion’] out and making the next one of these…the answer is I don’t know.”
He was then asked if we’ll honestly ever see more “Star Wars” films from him, and Johnson replied, “God I hope so.”
As he mentions, Johnson is about to release ‘Glass Onion,’ and he’s signed on to write and direct at least one more “Knives Out” film. That would push his work on “Star Wars” projects to, at least, 2024. At that point, we’re approaching a decade since he started working on ‘The Last Jedi.’ But, then again, Johnson is getting more and more popular, so why wouldn’t Lucasfilm wait for him to figure it out?
Well, there is the bit about how ‘The Last Jedi’ completely polarized the “Star Wars” fandom and seemingly started the trend of the Sequel Trilogy featuring three films that barely link up in any meaningful way. So, with that much pushback from the fans, and Kathleen Kennedy’s reluctance to commit to any “Star Wars” film project for fear of screwing things up further, perhaps there is a bit of hesitancy to work with Johnson again?
But as alluded to before, there seems to be a distinct lack of direction for the “Star Wars” film franchise. (TV is going strong on Disney+, it would seem.) There are no fewer than four “Star Wars” films in development (if you include Johnson). And according to a new report from Puck, the confusion surrounding the future of the “Star Wars” film franchise has to do with Kathleen Kennedy not really knowing which direction to go in with a penchant to “change her mind often.”
All that to say, we have no idea what “Star Wars” film will actually arrive in December 2025, which is the next announced date for the franchise on the big screen. Honestly, with no firm production schedule seemingly ready to announce, we’re not even sure if a “Star Wars” film will arrive in 2025. However, when you mention all the “Star Wars” films in development, don’t leave out Rian Johnson’s work. That’s still going to happen, if the filmmaker has anything to say about it.
