Move over Paper Magazine critic Dennis Dermody, there’s another New York critic even more cranky and contrarian, and he’s been doing it for years. That’s right, Melissa McCarthy‘s biggest fan, Rex Reed of the New York Observer, has weighed in on his worst films of 2013, and usual, he’s running hard against the tide.
Two of the most celebrated films of the fall season—the Coen Brothers‘ “Inside Llewyn Davis” and Spike Jonze‘s “Her“—make the list, and so too does Harmony Korine‘s “Spring Breakers,” but let’s face it, there’s no way Reed was going to like that movie anyway. Terrence Malick tops the list with his admittedly divisive “To the Wonder,” while Reed pours another one out for McCarthy with “Identity Thief” making the ranks too. But credit to Reed—we’re glad someone else is realizing how truly awful “Charlie Countryman” is.

If Rex Reed made an all-time favorites list, it could double as a Royals Portrayed on Film greatest hits package.
"Terrence Malick tops the list with his admittedly divisive "To the Wonder" " Divisive? It was a pile of crap, like a two hour perfume advert.
Rex Reed is a total ass. Spring Brkrs, Llewyn Davis and Her are amongst the finest films of the year. Gatsby too.
To The Wonder –romina mondello bardem ben
Her –rooney joaquin
Spring Breakers –franco

Charlie Countryman –mads shia evan rachel
i want to watch every single one of them 🙂
I just looked up his "best of 2013", it is pretty conventional and pedestrian. He has the overly mainstream PRISONERS on the list, and his "radical" pick is WHAT MAISIE KNEW.
Sounds like a tool.
I wish reviewers would stop putting well regarded movies that they didn't connect with on their worst of lists. It just reinforces the stigma of pretentious douchebag that is so often lobbed at them. Maybe you didn't like Her, To The Wonder, Only God Forgives, Inside LLewyn Davis, etc but from a base technical level they simply cannot be considered the worst when films like Hansel and Gretel, Grown Ups 2 and Gangster Squad exist and you lessen the value of your opinion by putting them as "worst" . Pull your head out of your arse and either choose films suitable to the title of your list or don't make one at all.
I've seen worst critics *coughArmondWhitecough*
To the Wonder was like a parody of Malick's films.
Yeah, he IS right about Charlie Countryman, though, like you said.
Personally, I don't know why any gives a crap what Rex Reed thinks. Since the invention of the internet, why do we care what old, fat, bearded white guys think about movies? We got Red Letter Media for that…
Wow. Such edgy. Much contrariety. Wow
