A few release date shifts and new adds to note today.
Nanette Burstein’s “Going The Distance” long-distance relationship rom-com starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long (two real-life ex paramours of course) has been bumped a week from an August 27 release date to September 3. Nothing major there as the film’s prospects don’t look great either way. Burstein has the goodwill earned from the documentary “American Teen” going for her, but that’s not likely going to help her outside film geek circles. Late August, early September is pretty much summer’s dumping ground and when audiences go on vacation away from theaters.
A more promising shift lands for Neil Burger’s sci-fi-ish “The Dark Fields” starring Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish and Robert De Niro which was once scheduled for true dumping ground season, January 21, 2010. Relativity Media has now moved that date to March 18 which is a pretty respectable date.
The film also stars Anna Friel (“Pushing Daisies,” “Land of the Lost”) and centers on a copywriter (Cooper) who discovers a top-secret drug that enhances intellect and other abilities. As his usage begins to change his life, he begins to consider the drug’s shadowy origins; meanwhile, a group of killers trail his every move.
Burger directed “The Illusionist” with Ed Norton and Jessica Biel in 2006 and and the post-Iraq war drama, “The Lucky Ones” starring Tim Robbins, Rachel McAdams and Michael Peña in 2008.
