For years now, Regina King has proven that she is one of the best actresses working today. However, last year, she showed that she is also one of the most promising new directors in Hollywood thanks to “One Night in Miami.” And with that acclaim bolstering her confidence, it appears that King is ready to try something completely different with her next job as a director, with the film “Bitter Root.”

According to THR, King is set to direct a feature film adaptation of the comic book series, “Bitter Root” for Legendary Entertainment. The film is based on the comic book series of the same name from creators David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown, which tells the story of a Black family during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s that fights monsters. Legendary’s official description of the film says, “For generations, the Sangeryes have hunted and cured those infected by a supernatural force that feeds off of prejudice and transforms humans into monsters. But with most of the family gone, the remaining Sangeryes disagree over saving or killing the monsters.”

As mentioned, “Bitter Root” marks the first feature directorial assignment for King since her debut in last year’s “One Night in Miami.” That film would go on to earn three Oscar nominations and three Golden Globe nominations, as well as near-universal acclaim for King as the director. Clearly, when you have such a hit for your first directorial outing, all eyes are on what is next.
It’s unclear when filming might begin on “Bitter Root.” Until then, film fans will be able to see King in front of the camera as part of the ensemble for the highly-anticipated Netflix feature, “The Harder They Fall,” which is likely to be released sometime this year.
