Record 92 Countries Submit Foreign Language Film Entries for 90th Oscars

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced that a record 92 countries submitted entries for Foreign Language Film category consideration this year. Notable first time participants include Haiti, Honduras, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mozambique, Senegal and Syria.

After Trump’s announcement of a Muslim Ban last January steered the Academy into voting for Iran’s “The Salesman” over Germany’s “Toni Erdmann,” this year’s FLF race is considered a wide open race with no true frontrunner as of yet. Major contenders for a nomination include “First They Killed My Father” (Cambodia), “BPM (Beats Per Minute)” (France), “The Insult” (Lebanon), “Foxtrot” (Israel), “The Square” (Sweden), “In the Fade” (Germany) and “A Fantastic Woman” (Chile).

As revealed last month on The Playlist, there have been changes to the first round of voting in this category. Members who participate in Los Angeles will now be assigned specific films to watch (previously they only had to screen 80% of what was earmarked for their committee).  Members will also be allowed to judge other contenders they were not assigned.  The rest of the process is still the same. The results of the first round votes will be taken into account by the committee who will add three “saves” for a final field of nine pictures up for consideration. Those nine finalists will be announced in December and then judged by by a select group of members in Los Angeles, New York and London the weekend before the Oscar nominations are announced. Their tabulations will determine the final five nominees.
