Rachel Portman Scoring Lone Scherfig’s ‘One Day’ With Anne Hathaway & Jim Sturgess

Rachel Portman is name that isn’t mentioned often enough when talking about great contemporary film composers. She’s a three-time Academy Award nominee, winning once for “Emma,” and has provided a number of memorable scores over the years but most recently, she delivered an excellent, piano-impressionistic and forlorn (as well as sadly overlooked) score to Mark Romanek‘s “Never Let Me Go” (one of the year’s best, in our opinion). And while we’re bummed the Academy didn’t recognize, there will be plenty more to look forward to from the composer in the coming year.

Film Music Reporter reveals that Rachel Portman will be scoring “One Day” starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Set to hit theaters this summer, the film, directed by Lone Scherfig (“An Education“) and based on the book by David Nicholls (who co-wrote the script), tells the story of a couple—Dexter (Sturgess), a spoiled rich TV host and Emma (Hathaway), a politically minded, insecure, working class Yorkshire girl—who meet on the same day, July 15th, for the 20 years after they share a one-night stand together at university.

The premise is promising, the supporting cast — Rafe Spall, Romola Garai, Patricia Clarkson — is ace and the talent both in front and behind the camera is top notch. We’re definitely hoping this is a few notches above your standard rom-com fare. “One Day” opens on July 8th. And that’s not all, Portman also has scores in the works for the Robert Pattinson period drama “Bel Ami” and the Rachel McAdams romantic drama “The Vow,” which should both be hitting cinemas this year too.
