Just because you file bankruptcy and have your assets sold off the highest bidder doesn’t mean that you can run away from your debts. At least that’s what many in the film industry are saying to The Weinstein Company. Apparently, the bankruptcy court was busy on Monday.
In objections filed to the Delaware Bankruptcy Court (via THR), many prominent figures in Hollywood are making claims that The Weinstein Company (TWC) owes them millions of dollars. Leading the way in none other than frequent Weinstein collaborator, Quentin Tarantino. The famous filmmaker claims that he’s owed large sums of money for four of his films. Tarantino is demanding $300,000 for ‘Grindhouse,’ $575,000 for “Inglourious Basterds,” $1.25 million for “Django Unchained,” and nearly $2.5 million for “The Hateful Eight.” In addition to these dollar amounts, his lawyers want to look at the accounting for each film, to see if there’s anything else owed.
But it’s not just Tarantino who is allegedly owed large sums of money. Leonardo DiCaprio says he’s owed money to “cure a default” under his acting agreement for ‘Django.’ Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams are looking to settle debts over the film “Southpaw.” And Jennifer Lawrence is looking to reclaim over $100,000 for money owed for a contract breach for “Silver Linings Playbook.”
Meryl Streep and Brad Pitt are hoping to take a look at the accounting for two of their films for additional back-end payments. There’s just a laundry list of Hollywood types looking to settle supposed debts with TWC. The list includes Stephen King, Bill Murray, Julia Roberts, Lin-Manual Miranda, John Cusack, David O. Russell, and the estate of Wes Craven.
Interestingly enough, one of the biggest names filing an objection before TWC bidding is none other than Harvey Weinstein himself.
It looks like maybe there are some big paydays ahead for Tarantino and the rest.
