Quentin Tarantino Signs Two-Book Deal Including A ‘Once Upon A Time’ Novelization Coming Next Summer

Quentin Tarantino has made it clear that he’s been planning on writing his first novel before working on his upcoming feature. And as promised, that book is on the way. However, it appears that his new deal with publisher HarperCollins isn’t just for one novel, but it’s actually for two new books.

According to Deadline, Tarantino has just signed a two-book deal with HarperCollins. The first book on the schedule is a novelization of his most recent film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Clearly, the filmmaker is influenced by the novelizations that were so prevalent in his youth and he’s expecting to bring that love to his first work of fiction.

The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” novelization will expand on the story of his film and give us a deeper dive into the lives of TV actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double/best friend, Cliff Booth. The novel will arrive in stores next summer.

The second book on the horizon from Tarantino is titled “Cinema Speculation.” The non-fiction book is described as a “deep dive into the movies of the 1970’s, a rich mix of essays, reviews, personal writing, and tantalizing ‘what if’s,’ from one of cinema’s most celebrated filmmakers, and its most devoted fan.” So, if you’re a fan of the various essays and interviews Tarantino has given about old Hollywood and his adoration of films, this is right up your alley.

“In the seventies movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading,” said Tarantino. “And to this day I have a tremendous amount of affection for the genre. So as a movie-novelization aficionado, I’m proud to announce ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ my contribution to this often marginalized, yet beloved sub-genre in literature. I’m also thrilled to further explore my characters and their world in a literary endeavor that can (hopefully) sit alongside its cinematic counterpart.”

HarperCollins Vice President and Executive Editor Noah Eaker said, “Quentin Tarantino’s literary talents have been in plain sight since his first scripts, but to see how skillfully he endows his characters with life on the page and how he constantly takes a reader by surprise, even one who knows the movie by heart, is to see a master storyteller trying on a new form and making it his own.”

As mentioned, the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” novelization will arrive next summer in paperback with a hardcover edition coming in the fall. A release date for “Cinema Speculation” is not known at this time.
