Got a Tip?

Quentin Tarantino Has A Sci-Fi Movie Idea Brewing; Confirms He’ll Direct ‘The Hateful Eight’ Next

nullEven before a frame has been shot, Quentin Tarantino‘s "The Hateful Eight" has had quite the life. Announced last year as his next project, it wasn’t long after when an early draft of the script leaked, and he furiously decided to can the movie. But almost just as swiftly, he changed his mind and continued to develop the script, and then earlier this spring, he staged a starry live reading of what he had on the page so far (read our review of the event). And basically, the chatter was that Tarantino was going to ultimately direct "The Hateful Eight," and soon, with Kurt Russell (who participated in the live read) recently suggesting that cameras would roll in early 2015. And while Tarantino didn’t give an exact date, he’s now confirmed this film is next on his slate.

The director was at Comic-Con yesterday at the Dynamite Comic’s panel to talk up his "Django Unchained"/"Zorro" crossover comic (more on that in a sec). But of course, the inevitable "The Hateful Eight" question would be posed, and when asked if the film would be next, Tarantino answered: “Yeah – We’re going to be doing ‘The Hateful Eight.’ ” A cagey response, but a confirmation nonetheless, but the director was most chatty about his comic.

“I loved this idea, not only because I like western comics in general, but I also loved Zorro in all his iterations whether it was the Disney series or the William Witney films. I thought it was a great idea of taking the most famous, fictional Mexican western hero and putting him together with the newer, famous black western hero,” Tarantino stated about the concept that will team up the gunslinger and the masked man, four years before the events in "Django Unchained."

“I don’t want to make a ton of Django movies so this offered me a chance to keep control of the mythology, but to tell different stories,” he added, as well, though we wonder if that means he still wants to do his miniseries version of the movie.

So, more ‘Django’ and "The Hateful Eight" on the horizon, is that it? Nope. Tarantino is always dreaming up new ideas, and it looks like he’s already toying with stepping into a new genre he hasn’t tackled yet. Asked if he would ever take on a sci-fi or fantasy flick, Tarantino said he was very open to the idea. "If you had asked me a few years ago I would have said: ‘Nah, not really, I don’t know.’ But i have a little idea right now. It’s a little flower, you know, like a bean sprout, but those tend to grow into stalks. So this is the first time I’ll be able to say ‘maybe.’ It won’t be a spaceship sci-fi, it’ll be Earthbound," he explained.

Sadly, no more details were wrung out of him about what he’s got brewing, but his answer to the question about whether or not he’d take on an existing franchise, says it all. "A series that I would like to put a spin on is the ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers.’ I want to take it from the pod people’s perspective, so you’re actually rooting for the pod people. I don’t think they’re so bad," he said.

Thoughts? Tarantino shifting gears for sci-fi is definitely an intriguing prospect. Let us know what you think below. [Collider/Deadline/Guardian]

  8. Quentin Tarantino:

Out of all human potentials for movement, speech, thinking and self expression, why this?
    Why on earth this?

What kind of human being are you and your apparent "fans"?

I'm scared, and sickened at what must apparently go on in the minds of people around me.

And before you jump to the usual conclusions – I'm well aware of the difference between movie and reality, the artistry that goes into making a movie vs. the drama of real life etc. – I'm not questioning the craftsmanship, I am questioning the intent and sense of "rightness" that underlies these films.

  9. They say that Lucio Fulci was a hack director but it was in fact quentin tarantino who stole from him and a lot of other directors as well! Of course film critic douchebags will say that Quentin tarantino was only "inspired" by other directors! What a crocka shit!

  10. I hope his scifi idea is to have NASA launch his ass into outer space so I won't have to listen to fans of shit directors tell me how great his films are anymore.
    Me: 1
    Internet: 0

  11. Frankly, I've had enough of these tacky pseudo remakes he keeps on pumping out. Does Tarantino have any originality left in him or was it all used up in Pulp Fiction? A remake of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the most pretentious thing I've heard all day. I loved the original when I saw it when I was a kid and it sounds like Tarantino's idea will just be a butcher. The guy needs to get back to his Indy roots as he has became way too Disneyland for me.

  12. Check out early Buck Rogers comics – they're set on PA Earth. Keeep the biplanes and anti-gravity belts (meaning Mad Max stuntflying & wirefights), change the dodgy Chinese caricatures to Suit-wearing Corporate Triad assasins with unlimited bullets, Steppenwulf on the soundtrack, you're there.

  13. Well, Mr. Tarantino, if you visit this website and read people's comments (I'm sure you don't), I just want to say that after these next movies I'd love to see your take on some space ship sci-fi, too…

And honestly, I'd love to see your take on your original Natural Born Killers script. Stone's was great and all, but I have a feeling your own interpretation would have been better.

  14. Personally would prefer him to try his argumental senses on a remake. Of ANYthing! Too bad it's Earthbound (predictable) because Altair IV hasn't seen any tourists in a long spell….

  15. I don't get it, how/why would the comic take place 4 years prior to the events of the Django Unchained movie? He didn't learn how to shoot until Dr. King Shultz taught him how. 4 years prior to that he was a slave, not a gunslinger.

  16. This guy has a sick brain – his movies make me sick.
I still don't understand how the critics are all over his films.

I could see some quality in "Reservoir Dogs" which had some over the top moments as well, but the conflicts were so delicate.
Pulp Fiction was at least somewhat dense even though it made me nauseous and made me hate life and the people in it.

But Kill Bill and Django (forgetting about "Death Proof)?

Narcisissm on autopilot is all I could see.
It was clear in every scene how they would end, what would happen, no surprises.
    Competely pointless movies.

Nice colorful photography – that's about the best I can say.

Seriously – Tarantino it the most overrated directory of our time, it seems to me he is most of all a narcissistic psychopath.

  17. The guy is gold; and if he sets his mind to a sci-fi film, the results should be truly awesome.

I imagine a story similar to Cowboys vs Aliens, with a much better execution.

  18. I know he's a fan of Dark Shadows. Despite Burton and Depp's retarded fiasco I think there's life in the franchise and would love to see Quentin's take on the series, heck Quentin might play Quentin……

  19. How may I send Quinton my book for him to review. It has received over 100 rave reviews and I know it would make a great movie or series. This may be inappropriate. If it is forgive my ignorance.
