For years, Cinemax was known as the cable channel that played, ahem, movies, “after dark” for the adult crowd and insomniacs. While it’s still not prestige TV yet, the channel is certainly classing up the joint a little bit. It started in a major way with Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick,” and shows like “Outcast” are garnering critical traction too.
Next up in the queue, which looks pretty intriguing, is “Quarry,” starring Logan Marshall-Green (“Prometheus”) aka Tom Hardy’s lookalike. And just today, Cinemax announced the show’s world premiere on September 9, close to three years after a pilot directed by “Lawless” helmer John Hillcoat was filmed (Marshall-Green was the only cast member to carry over: Stellan Skarsgard and Mary Elizabeth Winstead were in the original incarnation but didn’t make it to series).

And it’s dark stuff. Based on the Max Allan Collins novel of the same name, “Quarry” tells the story of Mac Conway (Marshall-Green) a Marine who returns home to Memphis from Vietnam in 1972 and finds himself shunned by those he loves and demonized by the public. As he struggles to cope with his experiences at war, Conway is drawn into a network of killing and corruption that spans the length of the Mississippi River.
Also starring are Jodi Balfour (“Final Destination 5”) as Joni, terrific Scottish character actor Peter Mullan (HBO’s “Olive Kitteridge”) as The Broker, Nikki Amuka-Bird (“Luther”) as Ruth, Damon Herriman (“Justified”) as Buddy, along with Jamie Hector (HBO’s “The Wire”).
“Quarry” debuts Friday, September 9 at 10 p.m. on Cinemax. Watch the first teaser trailer for the show below. [Photos via TVLine]
