Yep, that’s about right. Not sure what else I was expecting, but the first trailer for “The Purge” TV series, coming to USA Network, looks exactly like every other ‘Purge’ thing ever. Masks? Check. Wealthy people executing the less fortunate? Check. Political speech-like narration? Check. But somehow, even though I’m one of the few that will admit to like the franchise, it’s hard for me to get excited about this series.
You see, back when the series was announced, the creator of the franchise, James DeMonaco, said about the series, “It will reveal to the fans what happens the other 364 days of the year and how that law affects people.” But in the trailer, we get none of that. What DeMonaco describes actually sounds like an interesting premise for a TV series, and that’s what I was expecting to see.
Of course, the series might have those elements, as well. It is a 10-episode “event series” that couldn’t just be 10 hours of ‘Purge’ action, right? And yes, this is just a teaser, and future marketing could show more of the world-building that the creator promised. But right now, with this tease? Color me unimpressed.

But hey, for those that just want to see random people in masks terrorize other random people, then this teaser promises good times ahead.

Based on the hit movie franchise from Blumhouse Productions, THE PURGE revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Set in an altered America ruled by a totalitarian political party, the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. As the clock winds down, each character is forced to reckon with their past as they discover how far they will go to survive the night.
