Got a Tip?

Public Enemies: Character Posters Are The New:, “Lets Milk This Promotion Forever”

You want a poster for every character for every film for the rest of time? You’re a studio who is more than happy to oblige, dolling out one new poster every few days to keep the fumes of buzz going? Enter the character poster.

They’re not new, but they’re everywhere this year — “Inglourious Basterds” being a big culprit having released five of them — and now there are three new ones from Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” including one for Johnny Depp’s John Dillinger character, one for his love interest Marion Cotillard (take a close look at the godawful photoshop job on her version) and one for the dogged FBI pursuant Melvin Purvis as played by Christian Bale.

The only mistake Universal made this time was rolling them out all at once. One every other day to extend fumes! C’mon, guys, get with it. Either way, for bloggers looking to churn out crap content each day and studios more than willing to deliver the goods, we’ll all be one big promotional-tool happy-o-sphere, right? Expect more of these from every film that comes down the pike. Expect us to kvetch about them, but perhaps not resist the temptations, regardless. [IMPA Awards via /film]

  1. Is Trainspotting the granddaddy of this? First recent movie posters I remember that had variations for the characters, though maybe Batman Returns counts even though there were only three?
