Promising Trailer For Ricky Gervais And Stephen Merchant’s ‘Cemetery Junction’ Leaks

A David Bowie-Mott The Hoople-backed trailer for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s “Cemetery Junction” has leaked online and, as promised, exhibits a more dramatic turn from the duo behind “The Office” and “Extras.”

Starring the relatively unknown quartet of Christian Cooke, Tom Hughes, Jack Doolan and Felicity Jones, the coming-of-age tale centers on three blue-collar friends in 1970’s England as they bide their time joking, drinking, fighting, chasing girls and the sexual revolution they’ve heard so much about. Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode, Emily Watson add star name to the cast along with Gervais and Merchant in small roles.

The trailer has plenty of Gervais-isms — Cooke’s protagonist is pretty much channeling the comic when he says the line about “losing [his job] getting caught drawing a pair of tits” — but still shows that the writing-directing duo are confidently veering into uncharted territory with a more grounded, hearty tone to their story and characters.

“Cemetery Junction” also sees Gervais downgrade himself to a supporting role (a mature move, we think) in a project set in his hometown, inspired by his own childhood and that reunites him with Merchant after a streak of run-of-the-mill high-concept Hollywood comedies sans his partner-in-crime. We’re liking everything we’ve seen so far.

The film hits theaters April 7th in the U.K. but doesn’t of yet have a stateside release. [via Collider]
