“My name is Richard. I’m your professor,” says Johnny Depp in the new trailer for “The Professor.” “From here on out we’re going to do things very differently … Oh! And if any of you sell marijuana, please visit me during office hours.”
When you hear Depp say that line in the trailer, you realize that his latest film “The Professor” is not going to be the serious film you might suspect from the premise. As seen in the footage, the film tells the story of a professor that is told he has terminal cancer with only six months left to live. But if that sounds like a bit of a drag, don’t worry! “The Professor” is a laugh-filled romp with Depp’s Richard character living life to its fullest, getting drunk, smoking weed, not having a care in the world. You know, kinda like how Depp reportedly lives his life while not on camera.

“The Professor” is a film we saw way back at the Zurich Film Festival in October. Unfortunately, we were not fans of the film. Our review called Depp’s latest “yet another warmed-over male midlife crisis movie, given supposedly higher stakes because the middle of life will be as far as this male will get.”
The film is written and directed by filmmaker Wayne Roberts, who previously made the 2016 indie waitress drama “Katie Says Goodbye.” Interestingly enough, before being renamed “The Professor,” Roberts’ latest was actually titled “Richard Says Goodbye.” Perhaps Roberts has a bit of a thing for “…Says Goodbye” titles?
