The Producers Guild of America (PGA) picks are in and like we’ve said, the Guild awards are your best bet at predicting Oscar. The five films nominated include, “The Dark Knight,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Milk.”
This is as convincing an argument as ever that “The Dark Knight” will earn itself an Best Picture nomination and if you’ve been paying close attention to the Playlist lately (which you probably haven’t because of the holidays), you know that more and more, we’re starting to believe that this will be a reality (to some of you this will be like: “duh, finally!”). Poor “Revolutionary Road” continues to be snubbed and it looks like “Doubt” will have to be satisfied with sweeping the acting categories.
Here’s what the rest of their nominations looked like:
Producer of the Year In Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures
MAN ON WIRE
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
TROUBLE THE WATER
Producer of the Year Award in Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures
BOLT
KUNG FU PANDA
WALL-E
Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures
THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
THE DARK KNIGHT
FROST/NIXON
MILK
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
If you check the stats, in each of the past 5 years, the PGA has matched 4 out of the 5 Best Pic noms. Thats pretty good odds. So the question remains, which one will fall out? Benjamin Button has the lowest RT score in the 70s while the rest are in the 90s. But seriously, your guess is as good as mine. I think the only safe bet is Slumdog. The easier question might be, which film will be added? Doubt seems to be my guess for that.
And yes, it is a shame to see Revolutionary Road continue to fall by the wayside, but same thing happened to Jarhead (a film I loved but was critically mixed). Right now, Road has a 68% on RT, and thats just not a Best Pic percentage.
The more baffling question is, where is The Wrestler in all this? It is the best-reviewed film of the year (98% on Rt, thats 107 to 2, thats insane!!). How can a movie win so many over but not be good enough to win anything? Just wondering.
