Got a Tip?

‘Precious’ Soundtrack Features Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah & Mahalia Jackson; Due November 3rd

Much to our chagrin, Lee Daniels’ “Precious” is gaining a lot of Oscar steam and could be this year’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” if it’s lucky.

The film hits theaters November 6th and the soundtrack, details of which just hit, arrives on November 3rd. Mary J. Blige “I See in Color” is a song originally penned for the film and will probably vie for Best Original Song come Oscar time (that race is a pretty early one right now; you can hear the track below).

Apparently Mariah Carey’s “100%” was going to be used in the film— she has a supporting role and is actually quite good in the so-so film (full of garish, strange style) — but Blige’s track was used instead. Lenny Kravitz is the other musician in the film and he plays an empathetic nurse in this urban drama (in related musician/casting news, co-star Paula Patton is married to R&B whitebread Robin Thicke).

The accolades are just pouring out for this film and we don’t really understand why, but we’ll get into that in a full review. This is not the place for it, but the performances are great. The overall tone of the direction however is so egregious it almost ruins the entire film, but it’s a testament to the great actors who keep the film ultimately in check.

  1. If there were ever a time to ignore a critique and make a judgment call on your own, this film is an appropriate one to do it on…

The film is absolutely worth seeing…

  2. This was an AWESOME movie! I've heard negative comments about this movie's content; however, although it's fiction, this IS someone's life in America. It may not be our life, but this movie exposes some sensitive issues that families choose not to address and society turns a blind eye!

  3. This movie was one of the best I've seen in a long time. Someone's "opinion" shouldn't keep you from seeing this picture. I was also very impressed with the soundtrack, I have never heard these songs in any other film that I've seen.

  4. This movie was amazing! I have seen it twice. I work in the inner city for a community outreach, I know many girls just like Precious. I am encouraged that this film may actually help even one of these girls to speak out, realize that just because something is normal in their home doesn't mean it's right or good. I really liked the movie.

  5. Does anyone know what the name of the song in the movie trailer is – i really want to download it and i dont know the artist??? it says somthing about Happiness?

    Please help!

  6. The sad part is, you don't even understand the reason for this moive. Much of the reasoning for familial abuse and its origins are showcased here and it is a testament to the director that he didn't have to be too graphic. The fact that you do not want to understand that makes you less of a critic, not the movie less than it is. Stop critiquing movies because you aren't good at it. Try working for Sanitation, you seem to be good at garbage.

  7. Does anyone know the name of the song that plays when Precious is stealing fried chicken and running down the street outta the fried chicken joint? I know it's a hip-hop/rap song, but it wasn't on the album on iTunes. Help?

  8. the plot line was good, and I was keeping in mind that this movie, although fictional, is someone's life. I was quite honesty let down. I don't feel the movie lived up the hype. The actors , I thought did a great job…the story just moved too slow.
