If you’re a Hollywood studio in 2019, it’s likely that you’ve scored your various intellectual properties, looking for something that is worth rebooting, reviving, or remaking. And if that property has franchise potential, even better. In the case of “Power Rangers,” it’s obvious that Hasbro isn’t going to let that property sit on the shelf much longer, despite already attempting one reboot.
Last we heard, Hasbro was going to team up with Paramount to make a sequel to the 2017 rebooted “Power Rangers” film. That film, while not the box office success that the studio hoped for, was generally enjoyed by fans and showed quite a bit of promise with its young cast. However, after the rights were transferred to Hasbro, from Saban, the idea of a sequel became a bit murkier as time went by.

Now, thanks to a recent Reddit AMA with Red Ranger actor Dacre Montgomery, we have confirmation that a new film is in the works, but probably won’t be a continuation of the last film.
“I think there is a movie in the works but it’s not with me and the cast. So yes but not with us,” he replied when asked about a new “Power Rangers” film.
Ostensibly, that means we’re talking about yet another reboot of the franchise, which would challenge the record for the quickest reboot after a failed film. It has already been two years, but it feels like the new “Power Rangers” film was just released. That being said, we could be looking at something more akin to a “soft” reboot than the full-on retelling of the origin story.
Perhaps, Hasbro and Paramount are interested in making a new “Power Rangers” film that jumps right into the thick of it with the Rangers already having their superpowers and whatnot. This would be something similar to what Marvel Studios did in 2017 with ‘Spider-Man.’ Don’t tell a new origin story, and just assume that everyone will get the idea. Get new actors and perhaps change the look of the suits and Zords, then you’re good to go.
Either way, if you were hoping that Montgomery and the rest of the 2017 cast were returning, then you are seemingly out of luck.
