Color yourself not shocked. Yesterday, word rang out that Sam Mendes — and to a lesser extent Adam Shankman, who directed “Hairspray” — are vying to direct “Oz The Great And Powerful,” a prequel to the “Wizard of Oz” that may star Robert Downey Jr. as the man behind the curtain.
The LAT Times however has some updates. 1) Robert Downey Jr. obviously is in-demand and might be tricky to schedule and therefore can’t take the role, 2) Mendes, who seems to have jumped to this project specifically because ‘Bond 23′ folded was indefinitely delayed, is flying to the U.S. to meet with Disney execs. and SHOCKER, WAIT FOR IT, 3) the film will likely be shot in 3D.
Here’s our question. If the “Wizard of Oz” is based on one of Dorothy’s dream’s and isn’t real, then the wizard gets a prequel, because…. gotta love movie logic. Anything to make reboot a buck.
How can you be belligerent to revise history to imagine I never existed? MGM's godawful musical bastardization is based on my 1903 classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which did not have the "it-was-all-a-dream" cop-out ending. That trope was trite when I died–1919, when cinema was still in its goddamn halcyon days.
The only great cinematic adaptations of my works are Zardoz and The Wiz; they had the courage to be different without be cloyingly innocuous. In fact, Zardoz is one of the greatest films this ghost has ever seen.
I'm with the ghost. Zardoz is brilliant.
Agreed.
Why don't they just remake Zardoz?
In fact, screw that. Why don't they just re-release Zardoz on every theater and TV screen in the world for the rest of eternity?
