Still considered a flight risk, Roman Polanski request to be granted bail has been denied by the Swiss courts.
The 76-year-old filmmaker has been imprisoned since his September 26 arrest stemming from a 32-year-old unlawful sex with a minor charge in the United United States which he pled guilty to, but then fled from the U.S. when he learned the Judge was planning on reneging on the made plea-bargain.
Polanski was recently removed from detention to undergo medical treatment, but so far it’s unknown what his condition is.
Polanski is fighting extradition to the U.S. and will likely appeal the bail decision. His last bail proposal offered house arrest, handing over his passport and wearing an electronic anklet, but apparently the Swiss authorities felt this wasn’t enough, so it’s assumed he will make new bail proposal to the Swiss justice ministry.
Polanski’s arrest was called unfair by many, but Swiss parliament’s Foreign Policy Commission said the arrest was justified.”Switzerland as a country of law could not have acted differently,” they concluded. “No special treatment for prominent personalities can be considered when it comes to crimes.”
