Got a Tip?

Podcast: The Playlist Talks Highlights From TIFF, Telluride And NYFF; Plus Armond White: Genuine Contrarian Or Provocateur?

nullWe’ve decided to double down this week on podcasts to make up for lost chats. Our slate for this week’s show is as follows: a round-up of festival reports from Toronto, Telluride and the beginning of New York Film Festival. Later in the episode, we discuss contrarian film critic Armond White regarding two pieces he recently wrote: one, called “The Battle of The Andersons,” in which he claims Paul W.S Anderson is a better filmmaker than Paul Thomas Anderson. And the other, “The Whip and the Fedora,” in which he posits “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls” is better than “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

As always, sound off in the comments section below, and let us know your thoughts in general.

  1. In regards to Telluride vs Toronto, I have read that they are actually working together, and have been for some years. I am not surprised if one checks out their premiere pattern, especially over the awards films, over the past few years. I think that's not a bad movie, considering Venice and New York.

  2. Another great show. This has easily moved into the spot of my favorite film podcast. Love the loose, just talking films with friends format, please dont change this. Too many podcasts feel they need to be strict in their format. As for Armond White, when his contrarion position forces him into praising bad films it just comes off as bullshit. But when his contrarion position forces him to be critical of films which have high support in public opinion, he makes some very interesting, as with this Toy Story 3 review on the slashfilmcast, and important points. I think someone challenging public, or critical, opinion is good, and that we need people like that, but most of the times he comes off as disingenuous. Though I can't completely write him off because, occasionally, he voices valid criticisms which otherwise would be brought up.

  4. Interesting what you guys said about about argo. I think Argo is the perfect example of an "OSCAR Movie" that is : "correct" movie that will be forgotten in a year or two.

  5. That was all really good but I wish you guys would have gone into White's Anderson arguement a little more and actually talked about what the article said? I guess maybe it sounds like you think hes trash but then why feature him as a topic? Mostly I'm just interested cause I've never heard of him and I guess I wonder how anyone could even make these arguments…

  6. Marion Cotillard id definitely gonna be nominated. "Rust & Bone" is one the best film of the year! A powerful, brutal and haunting performance by Cotillard.
