It appears we have the classic he-said/he-said situation with Ennio Morricone and Playboy Germany. After the magazine published an interview where the famous film composer trashed Quentin Tarantino and the Oscars, Morricone issued a statement flatly denying the quotes were his and subsequently said he never conducted an interview with the magazine at all. Now, after the story has raged on for a couple days, Playboy has issued a statement, and guess what? They say the contents of the interview are completely accurate.
In a statement (via Variety), Playboy says, “We are surprised that composer Ennio Morricone denies giving an interview to German Playboy. In fact, the conversation took place on June 30, 2018, at his estate in Rome. The interview, about the concert organizer Semmel Concerts, which was also present at the interview, had been agreed to with German Playboy. We also cannot understand that parts of the published statements were apparently not found to have been accurate.”
Obviously, this contradicts the composer’s assertion that the interview never took place and that he didn’t badmouth Tarantino at all. At this point, it looks like it’s a case of two sides giving completely contradictory statements. It’s unclear at this time whether or not Playboy Germany has any video or audio proof of the interview, as that would be enough to make Morricone look like he’s not being truthful.

At this point, it’s up to film fans to come up with their own conclusions. Do you believe Morricone (who, for the record, has said not-so-nice things about Tarantino in the past)? Or do you believe the folks at Playboy who are sticking to their interview and it’s validity?
