When “Pitch Perfect 2” opened to $70.3 million in May, it made more business in one weekend than the entire domestic run of the original film. So if there was any hesitation about Universal giving a thumbs up for "Pitch Perfect 3," that certainly went away, and indeed the studio is pressing ahead.
THR reports that negotiations have begun for screenwriter Kay Cannon, who penned the first two movies, to return to write the third. Of course, there’s no word on what the plot might be, and it’ll be interesting to see how—without giving away spoilers—the Bellas get back together to sing again. And there’s the question of re-signing Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, who don’t have an option for a third film, and will likely to be able to command much higher salaries than the $2 million they received each for the sequel. No word yet if Elizabeth Banks will return to direct either.
But the long and short of it is, "Pitch Perfect 3" is gonna sing. Will you be there?
Update 6/15: Universal will release "Pitch Perfect 3" on Friday, July 21, 2017. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson will lead the ensemble once again.
This will follow the arc of the Iron Man films. First film is surprisingly delightful and gets a 2nd one greenlighted. 2nd one is lazy and has even bigger box office built on the goodwill of the first film. Third film will be incomprensible and an embarrassment as a film, but nonetheless profitable, though killing the franchise, at least for the immediate future.
