The Golden Globes nominations were unveiled, and as per usual, the punch was spiked as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association logged their votes. However, the this year the hooch was stronger than usual with some truly oddball nominees, and huge snubs. The latter category is where the Golden Globes raised the most eyebrows this year. The populist awards largely ignored acclaimed horror hit “Get Out,” which earned nods for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor, but with nothing for creator Jordan Peele. Similarly, Greta Gerwig, behind the camera for the adored “Lady Bird,” was also shut out.
However, one of the snubs that caused as much noise as the aforementioned omissions was anything love for “Girls Trip.” For a ceremony that creates entire separate categories for Musicals and Comedies, the box office hit ($138 million worldwide on a $19 million budget) and largely warmly received movie got no love from the HFPA. Not even rising star Tiffany Haddish managed a nod. It has raised the ire of co-star Jada Pinkett Smith, who in a series of tweets, has accused the HFPA of not even screening the movie.

Well, it’s pretty common knowledge that the Golden Globes essentially sees Hollywood courting with the HFPA with the kinda lavish attention, dinners and swag that they can’t do within the stricter rules of the Oscars. It’s what accounts for the random shock nominations of pictures you thought had no shot….and why other movies get left out in the cold. So yes, the game is rigged and unfortunately, it’s unlikely that will be changed. It’s too much fun for the HFPA to play, with the group long ago throwing out the idea of respectability.
Thoughts? Hit up the comments section. The Golden Globes will be handed out on January 7, 2018.
Maybe Jada should focus on her Scientology ridden children and Uncle Tom husband! There’s alwaus going to be movies and individuals that won’t make an award show. At the end of the day it’s hit or miss just like in real life. This lady needs to get over herself.
You could have made this post without that first sentence. Fuck off.
Stupid article.
Girls trip made $138 million. Really, did it?
Where, tell me where? In the freakin’ US.
Domestic: $115,108,515 83.0%
+ Foreign: $23,500,000 17.0%
The Globes is The Hollywood FOREIGN Press Association.
The key word here is FOREIGN, as in that part of the world who didn’t give a flying dutchman for Girls Trip.
Oh, and yeah, this “largely warmly received movie” (6.4 IMDB) – hasn’t even gotten to Danish cinemas. So why would they screen it for the voters? It’s not a cinematically released movie.
Yeah, but it’s an American awards show about foreign critics lauding US productions. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a foreign language category. Think your shit through, homie.
And why, praytell, would these foreigners laud a film that every foreigner apparently showed no interest in?
You think it through, Jack.
