If there are two filmmakers who know a thing or two about subverting predictable expectations it’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller. You probably don’t need to be reminded that "The Lego Movie" and "21 Jump Street" were both creative, wildly entertaining, hilarious efforts that went beyond being movies about toys or TV show reboots. But where do they go next? Well, "22 Jump Street" showed the pair can make a sequel and still keep things fresh, but what about "The Lego Movie," whose third act featured an out-of-the-box narrative shift? Well, it seems that will be the starting place for the next movie.
"Well I don’t want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older," Miller told Empire. "When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view? And it’s nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence."
So that’s a tantalizing little nugget to think about—for a long time, as "The Lego Movie 2" isn’t due to arrive until 2018. However, the victory lap for "The Lego Movie" isn’t done yet. Unless something goes horribly wrong, an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film is all but assured, and Warner Bros. is giving the movie one last push with a new featurette you can check out below.
