Update 10/31: Sony has announced that Zimmer, Pharrell, Johnny Marr, Michael Einziger and Dave Stewart will all create music for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
You might not realize it, but composer Hans Zimmer and producer/rapper/entrepreneur Pharrell Williams have a bit of an unlikely musical bromance. The pair not only teamed up for the music of the 2012 Oscar telecast, but have worked together on two films: Zimmer produced the soundtrack for “Despicable Me,” which Pharrell wrote the tunes for, while Pharrell was part of the drum orchestra on “Man Of Steel,” which Zimmer composed. And now another superhero is bringing them together.
In an interview with Billboard, Williams revealed, “Hans Zimmer and I are scoring ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2.’ ” Of course, what the extent of that collaboration will be (will it be a full on partnership or is Pharrell once again part of the vast crew of musicians?) still needs to be revealed, but it’s still a juicy, little nugget nonetheless.
Zimmer hasn’t been shy in the past about working with other musicians on scores, teaming with Rodrigo y Gabriela on “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” for example. And if anything, this news confirms that Zimmer and Pharrell clearly enjoy each other’s musical company. Anyway, we’ll how it all goes. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” hits on May 2, 2014. Hm, I don´t understand why they don´t give James Horner another try, who composed a really fine score for the first one – in fact his best score in years.
And as much as I like my german fellow Zimmer – does he really need to score another superhero franchise?
