The MCU films have often utilized side characters to act as the wingman/straight man to a film’s main hero. Some examples include Black Widow in “Iron Man 2” and “Captain America: the Winter Soldier,” Falcon in “Ant-Man” and Agent Coulson throughout Marvel Studios’ Phase One of their cinematic universe. However, it appears Marvel has now reached a certain plateau of credibility where their titled heroes, even lesser known ones, no longer need to rely on side characters to punch up their own films.

This new age of Marvel’s confidence in the solo exploits of their characters appears to be in effect regarding the dissolution a major rumor that emerged, thanks to some misreporting by Showbiz 411, that Jeremy Renner might reprise his role as Hawkeye in Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” However, the juicy gossip nugget was quickly nipped in the bud by director Peyton Reed:

Now that Renner making an appearance in “Ant-Man and the Wasp” has been thoroughly debunked the two-time Academy Award nominated actor’s Marvel duties appear only consist of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers 4,” due to be released in May 2018 and May 2019. It was initially believed Renner would return as William Brandt for “Mission: Impossible 6,” but a busy calendar will keep him out.
The monumental shooting schedule of the final two “Avengers” films will keep Renner occupied for a good chunk of 2017, but there is some possibility for downtime this summer. It will be interesting to see what projects he will choose to give his limited time and attention this year. [ComicBookMovie]
What a dumb article. They never needed side characters to “spice up a movie” and it’s part of creating an interconnected universe of films, duhhh. Who says they aren’t crossing over characters just because one rumored character isn’t appearing in one film? That’s quite a leap of speculative thought.
The first two paragraphs of this article are baseless nonsense. People speculated that Hawkeye was going to be in the movie and it’s been confirmed he’s not. That, by itself, establishes absolutely nothing other than Hawkeye not being in the movie. You’re trying to read WAY too much into that.
