Got a Tip?

Peter Berg To Direct Boston Marathon Pic ‘Patriot’s Day,’ Mark Wahlberg Eyes Role

Lone SurvivorPeter Berg and Mark Wahlberg collaborated on a surprisingly enjoyable and well-made war movie in the form of 2013’s “Lone Survivor.” That movie wasn’t “Paths of Glory” by any means, but it had an unpretentious, simple charm – not to be confused with simplistic. “Lone Survivor” was a hit for Berg and Wahlberg, and their continued bromance will next be on display with “Deepwater Horizon.” The pair also have an action movie in the works called “Mile 22” with Wahlberg and UFC fighter Ronda Rousey. Next, the “Ted 2” star will take his Berg-bro back to the beantown homeland for the upcoming “Patriot’s Day,” the next entry in the seemingly ever-expanding roster of films based around the tragic events of the Boston Marathon Bombing of 2013.

Marking the first-ever collaboration between CBS Films and "60 Minutes," “Patriot’s Day” will be told from the perspective of Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis, with Wahlberg said to be considering the role. Drawing from a script by Matt Charman, who also wrote Steven Speilberg’s upcoming Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies,” Berg certainly has his work cut out for him. He’ll have to compete with the Daniel Espinosa-directed “Boston Strong,” and then there’s “Stronger,” yet another Boston Bombing drama that marks the first collaboration between It-Actor of the moment Jake Gyllenhaal and indie stalwart David Gordon Green. But Berg and his star actor appear to have a solid working partnership in place: “Lone Survivor” was a modest wartime drama that worked way better than it should have, despite its limits, and I think we’re all hoping that “Deepwater Horizon” will be great in spite of original director J.C. Chandor’s departure.

No word yet on when production might begin, but it’ll have to wait for Berg to wrap on "Deepwater Horizon" first. [Variety]
