Earlier this year, indie filmmaker Ti West (“The Innkeepers”) released the indie horror hit “X,” set in 1979, and centered on a group of young filmmakers who set out to make an adult film in rural Texas. But when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast finds themselves fighting for their lives. Starring Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, and more, “X” was a fairly big hit for A24, but what audiences didn’t really know at the time was that West, in secret, had shot a whole other film, a prequel starring Mia Goth. And now we know all the details of the movie “Pearl,” including the first trailer.
Described cheekily as the “x-trodinary” origin story of Mia Goth’s character in the film, “Pearl” is essentially the back story on how Pearl became the person she was, but be ready cause it’s not pretty. Moreover, “Pearl” will be receiving its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in late August or early September. Here’s the official synopsis:
Filmmaker Ti West returns with another chapter from the twisted world of X in this astonishing follow-up to the year’s most acclaimed horror film. Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she’s seen in the movies. Pearl’s ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide, in the stunning, technicolor-inspired origin story of X’s iconic villain.
Along with Ti West, Goth will also be a co-writer on the movie and an executive producer on the project. “X” originally premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier in March this year, so this is two films in one year for the filmmaker, a nice feather in the cap achievement.
“Pearl” is set to star Mia Goth, David Corenswet (“The Politician”), Tandi Wright (“Xena: Warrior Princess”), Matthew Sunderland (“The Stranger”), and Emma Jenkins-Purro (“Bygones”). “Pearl” will be released theatrically on September 16, 2022. Watch the new trailer below.
