Got a Tip?

Paul Feig Calls Out Geek Culture “A–holes” In Wake Of ‘Ghostbusters’ Backlash

It has been really bumpy ride for Sony‘s “Ghostbusters” reboot/remake. Ever since it was first announced that the proton packs would be worn by women, mouth-breathing corners of the internet have been complaining about the gender of the leads. But matters haven’t been helped by the trailers (the most disliked in YouTube history), which haven’t been that great, leading even Melissa McCarthy to admit they’re “very confusing.” But it seems director Paul Feig is fed up with backlash.

“Geek culture is home to some of the biggest a——s I’ve ever met in my life. Especially after being attacked by them for months because of this ‘Ghostbusters’ project,” the director vented to New York Daily News.

Certainly, having a target on your back even before cameras rolled couldn’t have been easy, but Feig continues to defend his casting, saying he doesn’t care about gender and race, but making people laugh. “I live or die on what things are funny and whether or not people will be entertained by them,” he said.

Unfortunately, the messaging on the movie remains a little muddled, with Feig blurring the lines in explaining what kind of approach he took with the movie, saying he wantes to “tell a story you haven’t seen before. Or tell a story you’ve seen before, but in a way you haven’t seen it.” So maybe it’s a bit something borrowed, something blue? We’ll soon see.

“Ghostbusters” opens on July 15th, and so far, the courting of fanboys and the public has not gone so well….

      • ghostbusters is a corporate media property, it is not some sacred gift directly from god and his everlasting spirit. it had a million action figures and cartoons and media tie ins. this isn’t some pure artistic achievement being sullied here you clowns.

never seen so many adult men losing their shit at somebody trying to make entertainment for young women and girls, you know, people who aren’t you, who also exist in this world and don’t need you or anyone dictating what they should and shouldn’t be allowed to have or do because it infringes on your nostalgia.

        • “never seen so many adult men”

It’s not just adult men who take issue with this. Much like how Feig seems to be bigoted against geeks in this article you seem to be bigoted against ‘adult men’ in your comment.

          • oh no I’m “bigoted” against disgusting woman-fearing man children obsessed with corporate media products they use to substitute for having an identity, truly the most beleaguered and oppressed of all groups in the world.

          • I have a unique identity. And I can still see the wrongness of this film with an objective mind. And the plural is men-children. Hyphenated.

          • the “wrongness of this film” says a guy whose favorite movies are superhero shit and thinks harley quinn is going to get an oscar lol

          • I don’t know which post of mine suggests the superhero genre is my favourite. It isn’t. Porn is. And as for Ms. Robbie being nominated, there’s a year to wait for that. But thanks for reading up on my writing. I see it took you some time.

          • “I see it took you some time.”
literally the last handful of things you posted were a how-to on oblivious white guy shit posting?

          • Damn man… You act like you’ve got something personal invested in this movie… I do find it interesting that you don’t actually defend it but rather attack anyone who says something negative about it. Facts are Fieg was a bad call to direct it because he doesn’t do the kind of comedy the franchise was based on, very few people actually care that it’s an all female cast they just wish it had been women who were actually funny chosen for the roles, and the movie as shown so far via trailers and all discussion on the storyline has been presented as an utter train wreck in the same vein as Fantastic 4.

          • seriously doubt that’s the argument “why is there a black history month” guy is making, or that this movie is going to be any worse than the average superhero movie, in which nerds seem to be more than happy to suffer through mediocrity just to see superhero shit in an expensive live action movie.

          • So you’re saying you’re not a nerd and are basing your opinions on the entire culture based off of a single person whose quotes you may or may not be taking out of context? To be honest he’s been far more polite than you are and researching the claims of rage trolls has never been something that’s overly interested me. Judging by your previous statements though I do feel required to ask if you view everyone that disagrees with you as evil and stupid, or is it’s just the white males that earn that?

          • “culture” lmao. yes the rich and varied culture of memes and standing in line for midnight releases of media products

guy said there was no reason for black history month to exist, made numerous garbage statements about women, yet your bending over backwards to defend him because he’s “polite,” and you seem really annoyed at seeing “white male nerds” being denigrated as a whole.

such a white male nerd response lololol

          • You’re not very good at this whole “social” thing are you? It’s okay though! Internet troll looks great on the resume. At least try to be imaginative with the insults next time.

          • Then you need to choose your words a lot more wisely, because it is more than just “adult men” who are against this. By boiling down to “adult men” you’ve ignored all the others who hold the same view. All this so you could throw a barb specifically at adult men. That’s bigoted.

          • I swear you people. Some kid could run up to you and tell you captain america is his favorite superhero cause he hates bullies, and you’d be all “oh but it’s okay when he bullies nazis, huh?” That is, if you people applied the same bizarro logic to your beloved superheroes that you do reality, pretending we live in some context free equality fantasyland vacuum at all times. You have no sense of appropriateness. Here you are all defensive over somebody being mean to men on the internet when the men in question are specifically targeting a movie because it is a nerd property they hold dear remade to feature women. You don’t bat an eye at that, but somebody says something mean about men, that’s what gets you to go out of your way and make an effort lmao

          • Except it’s not clear at all, you’ve simply accepted what Feig and the press wants you to hear, completely ignoring the myriad other problems that most people actually have with the movie.

But hey, it lets you signal your virtue like you’re a better person than those around you.

          • Yes I’m sure the white male 4chan kids going out of their way to target this movie above all other shit movies have a nuanced take on the “myriad other problems” in it

But hey, if it lets you fulfill some image of how impartial and above it all you are to bend backwards to defend sociopaths, go for it.

  1. So.. you point out that Feig called geek culture “assholes” by calling them “mouth-breathers” and “fanboys” yourself. Good journalism, buddy.

    • did you want him to “objectively” report on the “alleged” assholes crying over women being in a ghostbusters movie in a non-secretarial role lmao

    • People think this looks like utter shit because they’re grown ass adults who still have an unhealthy attachment to nerd shit for their childhood and they don’t like that somebody is trying to let women in the nerd clubhouse. Quit kidding yourselves, plenty of shit movies out their that man child nerds don’t feel compelled to go to all this trouble for.

  2. When in doubt vilify a random group of people, especially when they’re not the only group of people who use social media nor the only group of people interested in the IP you’ve appropriated.
