Over the weekend, director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot took a trip to Brazil and debuted the first “Wonder Woman 1984” trailer at CCXP. And while there, Jenkins spoke (via Deadline) about the future of the franchise and a potential spin-off focusing on Diana’s homeland.
According to the filmmaker, the idea of where the future of “Wonder Woman” goes is already “mapped out.” And yes, that includes a possible spin-off film about Themyscira. But don’t go penciling in the film into your calendars. Just because there’s interest doesn’t mean there’s definitely going to be a film.
“We already have it all mapped out — it’s just a matter of will we change our minds and when,” said Jenkins. “I think what we don’t want to do is do it back to back. It’s been great doing these two movies back to back, but I think it’s important to give it a little rest in between — and I like doing other things in between.”
She added, “And Gal has other things to do. I never want to make decisions too far in advance. We have to see if we both feel like making the movie we think we want to make when the moment comes.”
So the answer to the question of whether or not Patty Jenkins is interested in making a movie about the Amazonian society she debuted in “Wonder Woman” is definitely “yes,” but that doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee. A lot can happen between films, and if Jenkins and Gadot are interested in stepping away from “Wonder Woman” after ‘1984,’ then perhaps they might change their mind about what the future of the franchise might look like.

But as we’ve seen with “Aquaman” getting a spin-off horror film, “The Trench,” Warner Bros. is comfortable expanding their superhero films into more unique territory. So the idea of doing a “Wonder Woman”-adjacent film about Themyscira isn’t a completely crazy idea. Obviously, if “Wonder Woman 1984” is able to replicate the financial and critical success of the first film, WB will be willing to back up a dump truck full of money at Jenkins’ door to entice her into making anything she wants.
“Wonder Woman 1984” arrives in theaters on June 5, 2020.
