It seems like a pretty substantial chunk of entertainment news within the last few weeks has been about revivals and reboots of various television series. Whether it’s studios cropping new streaming platforms (I’m looking at you Paramount+) or already-established services doubling down on pre-existing IP (à la the return of “Dexter” on Showtime), the nostalgia-propelled potential of these properties is clearly too lucrative to be dismissed. Starz is now joining in the revival fun with their cult comedy series “Party Down.”

While the show is still in its infantile stages of development, it has been confirmed that the original production team and most of the original cast will return. In a statement, co-creator Rob Thomas enthusiastically cited the genesis of the show’s revival. “At the end of 2019, the ‘Party Down’ cast and producers were all reunited at a retrospective for the show hosted by Vulture,” he explained. “We had such a good time that we wanted to find a way to get the team back together again. The cast is so busy these days that finding a window where we can do it may require trigonometry, but we’re determined to make it happen.”

Originally aired with two seasons in 2009 and 2010, “Party Down” centered on the incredibly niche subculture of Los Angeles-based cater-waiters, tirelessly working gig to gig until they make their big break into the industry. Christina Davis, president of original programming at Starz, fondly reflected on the series’s glory days and considers what the revival will mean to the show’s passionate fans. “Before the cast of ‘Party Down’ became well-known television and movie actors and award winners, they were all wearing the same pink bowties as part of a less-than-competent team of Los Angeles cater-waiters while chasing their dreams of stardom… Fans have been waiting more than 10 years for this revival to happen, and we’re thrilled to be in development with Rob, Paul, Dan, and John at the helm.”
Produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television, the “Party Down” revival will reportedly run in six parts. Co-creators Rob Thomas, Paul Rudd, Dan Etheridge, and John Enbom will return, with Enbom once again serving as showrunner.
