Got a Tip?

Paramount’s Delay Of ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ To Completely Redesign The Lead Character Cost Far Less Than You Might Expect

One week ago, fans of “Sonic the Hedgehog” were greeted by another new trailer for the upcoming film. And unlike the trailer that was released months before, those who watched the new footage seemed to really like what Paramount had done for the look of the character. You know, after the studio spent an additional four months completely overhauling the design, delaying the film in the process.

Now, with the film on track, a new report surfaced that wants fans to know that the entirely new look of Sonic in the upcoming film didn’t actually break the bank, as has been previously speculated.

According to IndieWire, reports that say Paramount spent upwards of $35 million to overhaul the look of the lead character in the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog” is way off. In actuality, the cost to completely alter the blue CGI anthropomorphic speedster actually cost a modest $5 million after everything is all said and done. Now, in an age where Martin Scorsese spent $160+ million to make Robert De Niro appear younger in “The Irishman,” how the hell did Paramount utterly obliterate the previous design and fix the CGI in “Sonic the Hedgehog” in four months without breaking the bank? Well, it all comes down to timing.

The report claims that the release of the first trailer, while a huge embarrassment for Paramount and everyone involved with ‘Sonic,’ was so far in advance that the only effects that were completed were the ones seen in the short clip. That meant that changing the design of the character wouldn’t mean the VFX crew would have to go back and alter the entire film, just a few clips that were already shown in the trailer. Silver lining, right?

Because of this, reports that Paramount is unfairly treating the VFX crew and spending tens-of-millions-of-dollars to redo ‘Sonic’ is grossly offbase. Sure, the studio would have liked not being publicly humiliated, but in the grand scheme of things, it might have been the best thing to happen to “Sonic the Hedgehog.” The film is now expected to hit theaters on February 14, 2020.
