You would think that a live-action/CGI hybrid adaptation of a video game featuring a bright blue hedgehog that teams with a local sheriff to stop an evil villain named Dr, Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey) would have plenty of questions and concerns. But alas, this is 2018 and when the first official poster for the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog” film came out, all people could talk about are the titular character’s legs. And because of that, Paramount is having a bit of fun trolling fans.
The first poster for ‘Sonic featured a black background with the blue outline of its main character in a typical pose. However, because the character has only ever been seen in animation, comics, video games, and other such media, this poster marked the first time that fans would see Sonic as a more “realistic” way, as he’ll appear in the film. And adding to the realism of a hedgehog with superhero-esque speed, Paramount and the folks behind the film thought that they’d give their main character muscular legs.
And boy, oh boy, did social media have a field day with that. Post after post, tweet after tweet, people were going crazy over Sonic the Hedgehog’s legs. All based on one teaser poster. So, that leads us to now, and Paramount’s response to this rabid trashing of its movie based on the legs of the character.
In a new tweet, the studio released a new image from the film, featuring the character holding a sign saying “Can’t a guy work out? Be back next year.” Then underneath the sign, you see the blue legs of the character, this time with even more drastically muscular legs, bringing to mind a bodybuilder. Clearly, Paramount is having some fun poking the social media beast.
Why wouldn’t they take advantage of the situation? Before a couple of weeks ago, no one seemingly cared about the film’s 2019 release except for the fans of the franchise. Now, thanks to social media, the first trailer or first true image of Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most highly-anticipated things of 2019.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” hits theaters November 8, 2019.
