‘Paradise Hills’ Trailer: Emma Roberts, Awkwafina, & Milla Jovovich Are Somewhere That’s Anything But Tropical

It’s always interesting when we get a “mystery community” thrillers. The kind of thrillers where our main character ends up in a place that isn’t as peachy as it appears. The upcoming “Paradise Hills” looks like it is that type of film and then puts a unique spin on it.

In “Paradise Hills,” which premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film FestivalEmma Roberts wakes up in a strange island where an upper-class boarding school called Paradise Hills resides. Because she is suspicious of what goes on in Paradise Hills, she decides to investigate. Awkwafina, Eiza Gonzalez, and Danielle Macdonald play Emma Roberts’ classmates who help her probe. Also, Milla Jovovich plays the mysterious headmaster of Paradise Hills.

At the helm is Alice Waddington making her feature film debut which is exciting. Also, Awkwafina gets to go serious again following “The Farewell.” With “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Ocean’s 8,” she’s proven she can be hilarious. But for Awkwafina to go from those to this is quite an intriguing segway.

As for Emma Roberts, it looks like she has a pretty challenging role. Roberts has attempted to stretch her acting chops before in genre fare like “Scream 4” and “The Blackcoat’s Daughter.” But this could be a role that has people giving her more proper credit. She’s proven herself to be a capable performer but still remains underrated.  Hopefully, that changes this time around.

Here’s the synopsis:

On an isolated island, Uma (Emma Roberts) wakes up to find herself at Paradise Hills, a facility where high-class families send their daughters to become perfect versions of themselves. The facility is run by the mysterious Duchess (Milla Jovovich) where calibrated treatments including etiquette classes, vocal lessons, beauty treatments, gymnastics, and restricted diets, revolve all physical and emotional shortcomings within two months. The outspoken Uma finds solace and friendship in other Paradise Hills residents — Chloe (Danielle McDonald), Yu (Awkwafina) and Mexican pop star Amarna (Eiza Gonzalez). Uma soon realizes that lurking behind all this beauty is a sinister secret. It’s a race against the clock as Uma, and her friends try to escape Paradise Hills before it consumes them all.
“Paradise Hills” open in theaters, OnDemand and Digital November 1, 2019, via Samuel Goldwyn Films.
