Oscar watchers at TIFF are looking for the next movie that could upend the Oscar race, and it could be “The Promise.” It comes from “Hotel Rwanda” director Terry George, and has potent subject matter, telling the story of a love triangle against the backdrop of the Armenian genocide instigated by the Ottoman Empire in the 1910s.
And George has a hell of a cast, with Oscar Isaac in his first post-“Star Wars” leading role, Christian Bale and “The Walk” star Charlotte Le Bon in the lead roles. And the film’s first trailer has arrived to amp you up for the film’s debut in Toronto in the next few days.
The film promises some swooning melodrama and some impressive production value, and could be legitimately important, given that Turkey denies the genocide to this day. But can it be good as well? Bale and Isaac’s involvement would seem to suggest so, but we’ll find out in the next few days. Watch the trailer below.
