After a seemingly successful debut with “Carnival Row” on Amazon, it appears that star Orlando Bloom is ready to make TV his home yet again for another series on the streaming service, titled “The Cleaners.” But those worried he is about to star in a show about vacuums and disinfectant, don’t fret. “The Cleaners” is a sci-fi tale that has very little to do with cleanliness and more to do about human feelings and memories.
According to Deadline, Amazon is developing a new sci-fi series titled “The Cleaners,” based on a story from author Ken Liu. The series will star Bloom as a young man that inherits his family’s cleaning business, but not the type of cleaning business you think. You see, in the future, cleaners are hired to erase the memories that have been imprinted on inanimate objects. This is important because there are folks with the ability to touch an object and immediately relive the memories and experiences of those who interacted with that same object.
Adding even more intrigue to the new series is the fact that the series is being written and produced by Dominic Orlando. In addition to this new show, Orlando has worked on two of the best shows to come out of Netflix, including “The OA” and “Mindhunter.” If that’s not enough credibility, we don’t know what is. And any news about a writer from “The OA” getting more work is good news by us, as that show is criminally underrated and gone well before its time.
Interestingly, “The Cleaners” is just one story that is set to be published by Amazon in a new anthology that aims to reimagine classic fairy tales. In the case of this story, “The Cleaners” is apparently loosely inspired by the classic, “The Princess and the Pea.” And considering Amazon is already turning this one into a series, it’ll be interesting to see if the streamer has plans to take more of those stories and adapt them into films and TV shows. The collected stories will be published on December 15. As for the show, no release date has been announced.
