The running joke about Florida is that it’s basically the biggest shithole in the US. No offense to Floridians (I am one, myself), but if you live in the state, you understand that all the jokes are very much based in reality. Yes, there are places like Disney and Miami. But by and large, 90% of the state is exactly what is shown on episodes of “Cops.” And that’s what makes the state perfect for the premise of “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.”
‘On Becoming a God’ tells the story of a young woman, played by Kirsten Dunst, who works at a water park for minimum wage (so Florida), that infiltrates a cultish group that drove her family apart. As seen in the first teaser for the upcoming Showtime drama, it looks like the nine-episode dark comedy series is going to lean heavily into the fact that Central Florida is such a great area to find some of the craziest, most strange folks in the US.
The series is debuting on Showtime later this summer, but originally, was supposed to be part of the YouTube Premium streaming service. This comes after the series was actually set up to be a new series for AMC. So, somehow, ‘On Becoming a God’ has gone from network TV to a relatively small streaming service with no subscribers to a premium network with other prestige titles. Failing upwards is a thing, folks.
Joining Dunst in the cast are Théodore Pellerin, Beth Ditto, Mel Rodriguez, Ted Levine, Alexander Skarsgård, and Mary Steenburgen.
“On Becoming a God in Central Florida” arrives on Showtime on August 25.
