Got a Tip?

Looking Back At A Crowded Film Weekend With ‘Old Guard,’ ‘Palm Springs,’ ‘Relic’ & More [Discourse Podcast]

When it rains, it pours. But sometimes, it’s a good pour.

On the latest episode of The Discourse – the show where we discuss film news, reviews, and any other pertinent pop culture items that we feel the need to weigh in on – I’m joined by Jenny Nulf (Austin Asian American Film Festival, Austin Chronicle) to discuss the onslaught of new releases that came out this weekend. You would think with theaters being shuttered amid a global pandemic that the streaming giants would talk to one another and spread the wealth of titles a little bit, but so it goes.

All of five of the titles we discuss on this episode have had significant amounts of online hype to them, and while it’s always great to see people beating the drum for these films (especially when they’re not fighting for the same space as theatrical releases given the state of things), we perhaps curb some of that hyperbole in our discussion.

We start with the two splashier titles (or at least the starrier ones that debuted one the platforms that most people subscribe to) in Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s “The Old Guard” (Netflix) and Sundance darling “Palm Springs” (Hulu). Then, we move on to a pair of slow-burn, festival-darling horror flicks: “Relic” (VOD) and “The Beach House” (Shudder). Finally, we end our discussion on Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” (VOD), which had started its platform release back at the end of February and was sadly cut off due to the pandemic.
