As a film fan, and a not-so-secret fanboy, of course, I enjoy “Star Wars.” I may not be the biggest ‘Wars-ian’ (that’s what they’re called, right?) alive, but I sure do like my laser swords and space magic. So, as a “Star Wars” fan, one of the things that have always bothered me, and apparently, quite a few others, is the anti-climactic battle between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader towards the end of ‘A New Hope.’ Well, thanks to the advancements of technology, the creative folks on the internet, and a love-affair with tinkering with the original films, that has been rectified.
For those that aren’t as big of fans of the ‘Wars as I am, the fight between Obi-Wan and Vader comes at the end of ‘A New Hope’ and is supposed to be the final battle between master and apprentice. And given the Prequels (which have their faults, amirite?) give a ton of backstory to the relationship between the characters, it’s safe to say that the fight in ‘Episode IV’ just isn’t up to snuff.
Enter the YouTube channel FXitinPost, and its reimagining of the Vader/Obi-Wan battle from the 1977 classic. Taking footage from the film, combining it with new shots and a heaping helping of CGI (not the best, admittedly, but still serviceable), the folks on YouTube have delivered a fight scene that feels more epic and fitting for all the buildup of the previous films. Plus, for those that loved Vader’s final scene in ‘Rogue One,’ this offers a chance to see that version of the character, utilizing force powers and advanced laser sword techniques.
Look, Mr. George Lucas did a mighty fine job with ‘A New Hope.’ That’s undeniable. But he, more than anyone, can probably see the value and creativity inherent with tinkering with the beloved classic. Hell, if the YouTubers play their cards right, maybe he’ll convince Disney to insert the scene in the next release of ‘A New Hope?’
