Last week, it was reported that Disney+ was going to be the home of a brand-new live-action “Star Wars” series focused on Ewan McGregor’s version of the famed Jedi legend Obi-Wan Kenobi. But outside of that, there wasn’t much news. Well, tonight, at D23, Lucasfilm decided to let the cat out of the bag and fully announce the untitled “Star Wars” series.
That’s right, the series is yet to be titled, so those thinking it would be “Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story” are most likely out of luck. However, it was confirmed that McGregor would be reprising his role from the “Star Wars” prequels in this new series. And perhaps the most shocking aspect of the announcement is that the series is coming way sooner than you might think.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that the studio already has all the scripts written for the Obi-Wan-centric series and production is expected to begin in 2020. That’s right, the on-again-off-again ‘Obi-Wan’ film/TV series that has been rumored for years is not only confirmed but will likely show up within the next two years. Wow.
No word on who is taking creative control of the untitled series. There had been a number of filmmakers attached to the project when it was rumored to be a standalone spin-off film a couple of years ago. However, with the box office failure of “Solo,” it appears that Lucasfilm might have retooled those ideas for the Disney+ streaming service.
The Obi-Wan series joins the already-announced “Star Wars” live-action series “The Mandalorian” and “Cassian Andor,” which star Pedro Pascal and Diego Luna, respectively.
