Got a Tip?

Now The First Look At The NSFW International ‘The Girl With Dragon Tattoo’ Poster Leaks

Update: /Film have gotten their hands on the French poster for the film which has a ludicrously lengthy website address. Check it out below.

So, is this all part of some massive viral marketing campaign or are there leaks in the Sony marketing department? We’ll leave it to everyone else to sort out, but all we’ll say is that given David Fincher‘s exacting demands on nearly every aspect of his films — including marketing — we find it a bit puzzling he’d let the first look at his highly anticipated film come via shoddy versions of the trailers or in this case, pictures of the poster taken at a local movie house.

Championship Celluloid (via Guy Lodge) snapped this international version of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” poster that recently arrived at The Belmont Picturehouse in Aberdeen, U.K. So why the NSFW tag? Well, Rooney Mara‘s pierced nipples peek out from underneath the date of the film stamped across her breasts. But if you’re a Fincher nut like us, you’ll know that the director had dreamed up this poster months ago.

Back in February the Hollywood Reporter got a peek at the one sheet describing it at the time as showing “Daniel Craig half-hidden behind co-star Rooney Mara, who’s looking directly into the camera. Her hair is spiky, her face pierced with rings, her body covered in tattoos. It’s black and white and beautiful, but there’s no way in hell any studio will ever let Fincher use it, as he knows. Because Mara is naked from the waist up.”

Looks like Fincher got his way.

The $100 million dollar production is still shooting from what we’ve heard. But Fincher is a multitasking workhorse, and still has half a year to go to finish up and deliver the film in time for its December 21st blow (or December 26th if you’re in the U.K.). A larger look below.

  1. If they actually wanted to shock people and tell them what the movie was about they could just have Salander on the poster carving the tattoo into Bjurman\’s chest. Or if they wanted to give a more accurate representation of Blomkvist and Salander\’s relationship they would have her behind him, a protective arm around him, because she pulls his ass out of the fire in the first film. This poster looks like an ad for Gap: Goth.

  2. DickieSmith, That is not what the book is about. She does not ask for or want protection. In the book it is she who ends up saving him. This is sexual fetishization which would be fine if it did not completely undermine the character in the books.

  3. What the Hell! I must have read a different book. This makes it seem like she needs protection from the tough guy. Why is he wearing clothes and she is not? Why is holding her in a protective, controlling manner and she doesn\’t mind? Why is she holding his arm as if she is thankful for his protection? Seriously I must have read a different book because the Lisbeth Salander of the book never would have allowed him to do that. She is the dom in the books when it comes to sex with the exception of real love interest Mimmi. She has sex with the dude because his body is convenient and she is the one who saves his butt not vice versa.

Watch them have the two fall in love and he becomes the love interest instead of Mimmi. She has gone from a strong sexual woman to sex object for men. What the hell was Fincher thinking. This poster is absolute trash.

  4. I have a different take. I don\’t think it\’s sexualising Lisbeth. It has Blomvkist looking as though he\’s trying to protect Lisbeth. Now given that in the book she is raped, I would say Blomvkist with an arm wrapped around protecting a naked Lisbeth seems like an interesting take on the film\’s plot. I certainly wouldn\’t say that it\’s sexualising her given that its an actress that is normally very attractive, yet here she looks unpleasant, no eyebrows, pearcings, underweight and make-up that make her eyes look like they\’re deeply sunk into her head. The pair do not look like they\’re from an Abercrombie and Fitch poster.

  5. It seems a little I don\’t know the right word, odd to be using sex appeal to sell a movie about abuse, torture, rape, misogyny and serial murder. The original Swedish title is Men who hate women for a reason. This looks like a fashion spread. I get it I get it, sex sells. And when they have a $100 million budget before P&A they want to do everything to get asses in the seats. It just doesn\’t represent what the story is. And what is with that tagline: Evil shall be expelled with evil. I never considered any of Salander\’s actions evil, even what she did to Bjurman which was caused by her abuse and lack of anywhere to turn for help. So what is the implication that Salander is as evil as the people she is pursuing? She\’s dark, antisocial, wounded, and violent. But her actions are in defense of herself and others. She doesn\’t actively seek to inflict pain in others as her enemies do.

  6. I\’m sorry, but Rooney Mara looks like a complete weenie compared to Noomi Rapace.

Noomi actually looked capable of ripping somebody\’s head off. Here, Rooney just looks like Daniel Craig\’s misunderstood Goth kid.

  7. I see something which could possibly resemble a belt buckle but compared to the positioning of her body it\’s way below the groin area which makes you wonder what the hell she\’s actually wearing and why is it so low? Still makes it look like she\’s naked. No doubt about it!

  8. @jimmiescoffee: it\’s not just \”half her stomach\”, she is COMPLETELY naked. As in no underwear, no top. Her breasts are completely bare and she is flashing us all her nipple rings. You can almost see her vagina. It doesn\’t matter if she is naked in the movie, it\’s the selling of her body for advertising that\’s offensive. Lisbeth is sexual as a person but she isn\’t sexy. No way would she let some man stand behind her holding her like that while she sells her naked body to the masses.

This looks almost like a Janet Jackson album cover. It\’s against the nature of the character and the movie which is about rape, torture, and killings of women. It\’s not supposed to be some sexy music video for 12 year old boys. Instead of selling the movie, Fincher is selling a sexualized Lisbeth Salander. Exploiting her for his own benefit. You have to read the books to know what\’s wrong with the poster.

  9. Just let me get this right. Is she completely naked in the poster? Cos i sure as hell can\’t see any underwear on her!

Definetely turning Rooney Mara into a sex symbol judging by the poster which is what the film is NOT about!

    Epic fail!

  10. if shes good looking is using sex? and because you see half her stomach? did you see the swedish films? wow you are all insanely sensitive. get over it.

  11. She isn\’t a sex object in the way we\’re used to. Her character is strong sexually, faces sexual abuse and is bisexual. That part of her is extremely crucial to the novel, and that\’s exactly what he\’s showing in both the trailer and the posters. This looks great in my opinion, it\’s dark, harrowing and gritty. Rooney Mara fits the exact image of Lisbeth I had in my head when reading this trilogy. I can\’t wait.

  12. Fincher is going a littler overboard in over-sexualizing Lisbeth Salander. Do we really need to exploit a naked Rooney Mara in all the marketing? The movie is \’Men who hate women\’, after the social network and now this I\’m starting to think that Fincher has interesting views on women. Lisbeth is going from badass to sexual object, I think he missed the point of the books.
