Tom Hardy + Noomi Rapace? Boom, done. When the idea was first floated a month ago, when Rapace was offered a co-starring role, we were already enthuiastic on the idea, but now the actress has gone ahead and accepted a role in "Animal Rescue," in what should be a pretty good showcase for both talents.
Set to be directed by "Bullhead" helmer Michael Roskam (oh yeah, the third reason we're down for this), the film is based on a short story by Dennis Lehane ("Mystic River," "Gone Baby Gone") about a lonely New York bartender, caught in the midst of a bad heist and a killing, who rescues a puppy from a garbage can and becomes the target of the dog's abusive and mentally unstable former owner. Rapace will play Nadia, who has a scar across her neck, who crosses paths with bartender, who finds the puppy outside her home. So does this mean these two will be squaring off? If so, fuck yes.
In case you forgot, the pair were also circling the Cold War drama "Child 44" that has "Safe House" helmer Daniel Espinosa slated to direct, but it seems this one won out. And it's moving fast. Production will begin this spring in New York City and hopefully by this time next year, we'll be trying to figure out which festival it'll be playing at first. [Variety]
So wait, we'll be sitting on the edge of our seats because awesome crime flick, and then crying because abused animals flick? And starring two amazing talents?
This sounds pretty brilliant.
Noomi Rapace was good in those " Girl With The Dragon Tattoo " flicks, but, since then , her other performances have not been grand. I truly believe doing American movies has hurt her acting career.
Michael Roskam is a major fan of Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann, so I'm expecting a film in the vein of Taxi Driver meets Collateral.
So Rapace was with doppleganger Tom Hardy in Prometheus, but is now with the real Tom Hardy. Awesome.
