Got a Tip?

Karyn Kusama’s ‘Destroyer’ Starring Nicole Kidman Sounds ‘True Detective’-Ish

Toward the tail end of the summer, we learned that Nicole Kidman — coming off a killer run that included HBO‘s critically acclaimed series “Big Little Lies,” Yorgos Lanthimos‘ equally buzzed “The Killing of A Sacred Deer,” Sofia Coppola‘s underrated “The Beguiled,” and season 2 of Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake” — was continuing her hot streak with Karyn Kusama‘s “Destroyer.” There wasn’t much info at the time, but new plot details have arrived, and it sounds like great.

Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, who penned Kusama’s excellent comeback feature “The Invitation,” have reunited with the director for another movie that touches upon cults. According to Variety, the story will revolve around an LAPD detective, played by Kidman, who as a young cop, went undercover with a cult-like group in California. It didn’t end well. Years later, the leader re-emerges, the detective has to face the past, and work through the remaining members of the group, to finally reckon with the past. Sounds awesome, and vaguely “True Detective”-ish too.

No word yet on when lensing begins, but the film is fully financed, so it’ll hopefully be rolling soon. We’ll be keeping this one on our radar for 2018.
