Got a Tip?

Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Neon Demon’ Inspired By Countess Báthory, Reportedly Set In The World Of Supermodels

Nicolas Winding RefnFilming starts this month on Nicolas Winding Refn‘s "The Neon Demon," with Elle Fanning,  Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone, Bella Heathcote, Keanu Reeves and Abbey Lee starring in the film. But there hasn’t been much in the way of plot details. We do know that the script was co-written by Mary Laws, and that the film is set in Los Angeles, but outside of that things get fuzzy. However, things are becoming slightly more focused.

Last month, Dazed And Confused caught up with Liv Corfixen, Refn’s wife and the director of "My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn," who revealed that the film is inspired by the tale of Countess Báthory, the serial killing sixteenth century countess who apparently bathed in the blood of virgins to stay young (the last detail is apocryphal, but makes for a good yarn). Moreover, the movie will apparently be like a mix of the survival story "Alive" and the dark comedy "Drop Dead Gorgeous." Now toss in Corfixen sharing that Refn has been acquiring "Christian movies" and, well, you have something that sounds pretty fascinating.

"He has always wanted to do a horror movie. That was the same with ‘Valhalla Rising,’ a Viking movie. He has the idea about 10 years before he makes it, so I think it’s an idea he has had for many, many years. To do a film like that he thinks, ‘I need to do a Viking movie, or a horror movie, or this and that movie.’ He has to get it out of his system to move on to do another movie," Corfixen said. As for what it’s about? "I don’t know yet. Maybe it’s about spirituality but I’m not sure."

Meanwhile, What Culture has a couple more details. They note the story is about "a group of supermodels going to extremes in their attempts to keep looking the way they do" including "voodoo and cannibalism."

Just tell us where to show up and we’ll watch this thing in a bloody heartbeat. Thoughts? Do you like what you’re hearing about the movie? Let us know below.

  1. refn\’s arrogance sometimes comes off as abrasive and not just run-of-the-mill confidence. not that that\’s a negative quality in a filmmaker, or any artist, but his interviews do make me cringe sometimes. however, if he keeps on making great films like the Pusher trilogy and Drive, i\’m all for giving him money for more "masterpieces."

  2. I saw him talk in LA a few weeks ago and when someone asked him about this the only thing he would say is that it is going to be a masterpiece. Not very subtle but based on every new tidbit that comes in and I\’m inclined to hope for the best

  3. I\’m excited! I\’m on the side of Refn lovers, despite the fact that he is such a polorizing director. I think that\’s what makes his stuff great though. Pumped to here more about this as it develops.
