David Denby may think that cinema is dead (or dying), but maybe the dude needs to get out more. The New Yorker film critic has dropped his list essay on the Best Movies Of 2012, and for a guy has found a lot of fault for how the studios make movies, his list features lots of studio and studio indie fare. Just sayin'.
Anyway, Denby has pontificated at length, declaring Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" as "the two strongest movies of the year" owing to the strong writer/director relationship in each movie (Tony Kushner wroter the former, Mark Boal the latter). Other films making the cut? Benh Zeitlin's "Beasts of the Southern Wild," Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and more along with a few documentaries as well.
