Got a Tip?

New ‘Terminator’ Film With Arnold Schwarzenegger Officially Attached Goes Out To Studios For A Deal

Well, he’s back. On the heels of his stupid looking animated showThe Governator,” and with rumblings of Ji-Woon Kim’s “Last Stand” and Antoine Fuqua’s “The Tomb” as possible new projects, Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to the franchise that made him a star in a new installment in “The Terminator” series.

Deadline reports that a package is now going out to studios– with Universal, Sony and Lionsgate already tipped as interested parties — that has Schwarzenegger attached to star, with “Fast Five” director Justin Lin set to helm in a film that would return Arnie in his iconic role. There is no screenwriter on board just yet, so no word yet where in the continuity of the franchise this would fall, but the biggest question mark for studios right now is how much this thing going to cost to them.

As you might recall, back in early 2010 hedge fund company Pacificor picked up the rights to the franchise for $29.5 million dollars. But further complicating matters is that Hemdale apparently owns some of the North American rights that they licensed from James Cameron and those will expire and revert back to the director in 2018. All this to say, the price tag just to pick up the rights is said to be starting at $25 million and possibly going higher. And it should be noted, these numbers are in the ballpark of the figures that had the major studios balking the first time around when the rights came onto the market so it will be interesting to see if they’ll wind up paying more just for the opportunity to put the film into development. Additionally, previous rights holders Halcyon, as part of the deal they struck with Pacificor, are entitled to payment of $5 million for any “Terminator” movie made moving forward.

While it seems like a slam dunk in terms of a blockbuster movie, there seems to be a lot of behind-the-scenes paperwork and payments that need to be made. Will a studio be willing to step and not only pay a huge price tag just get to the film moving, but make sure all the right parties are paid? It’s a big risk but with Arnie back it might just be a roll of the dice a studio might be willing to make.

  1. They shold have had Arnie playing the bad guy in all three. Imagine Arnie in molten metal. I would like to see the current cast continue until Reese heads back in the time displacement equipment. 3 films to get to that point, then terminate the series. James Cameron really needs to direct.

  2. Wow i dont care if Arnie is old,he is back, thank GOD.the only actor that comes close to Arnie is Bruce Willis,i cant wait for expendables 2 ! theres no other action heroes like them, seagal, van damme, stallone has reached their sell by dates.they suck! Go ARNIE & BRUCE jou lekker ding, moer hulle pap, julle is die beste.

  4. I was hoping they only make another Terminator film if the script was good and that they hopefully conclude the movie series.

When they announced that Helena Bonham Carter was playing the main villain in Terminator: Salvation, I was expecting her to be the Skynet equivalent of the Borg Queen from Star Trek. I was so disappointed in the end when I saw the film and it was a wasted opportunity to have a really iconic and memorable villain in the franchise. They should have had a confrontation between her, Christian Bale and Sam Worthington towards the end like with Picard, Data and the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact\’s climax

Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to do more dramas rather than just doing huge action blockbusters because he pigeonholed himself as an actor who just did action movies. He is an underrated actor. 5. They should start fresh with a new franchise along the same idea of assassins from the future after a pre-born hero\’s mother or grandmother. In the Terminator series, the robot could have just as easily gone back another hundred years into the past and merely, and easily, exterminate just one ancestor in the hero\’s genetic chain to eliminate him as a foe.

  6. This is just pathetic. For all us Gen X kids there was nothing more exciting than sneaking in on opening weekend and later on VHS, watching this guy shoot his way into the proverbial sun at the end of each movie; looking back a majority of his films were pure grade b level schlock but certainly better than the copies out there today. But gradually it became more apparent as I got older, the man was simply in it for the money. Granted there have been exceptions oddly enough each one involved Cameron; T2 & TRUE LIES & T23D (Universal Studio Attraction). So its curious as to why after all this time he\’s finally pushing for another TERMINATOR project when during his prime he didnt want to continue his involvement unless Cameron was at the helm. The \”franchise\” is already a mess , like starway2001 quoting Cameron who mentioned \”too many people have pissed in the soup\” I dont believe Cameron had any intention to continue after T2 because the story had been concluded and neatly wrapped, amazingly standing solidly as its own film. If anything Schwarzenegger should be pushing for a TRUE LIES 2 were he can act within his age limitations, if all parties were involved it could be like his own ROCK Y BALBOA.

  7. But he\’s too old. Way too old.

The only possible storyline is that he actually plays a human scientist forced into captivity by Skynet and builds the cyborg\’s in his image. Or something lame like that.

Otherwise they have no choice but to use Benjamin Button technology to \”youthify\” him.

I don\’t know. I love the first two movies a lot. But like Cameron said, \”too many people have pissed in the soup.\”
